1938, April 5 – Police and Fire Go Without Pay

Marion policemen and firemen encountered another payless payday Monday night when Finance Commissioner E.R. Jones reported to the city council that the state of the city’s finances would not permit transfer of funds to make a payment on back salaries in the police and fire departments. Commissioner Jones told the council that the policemen’s salary fund was already overdrawn and said funds could not be borrowed from special assessment funds without placing liability upon the Treasurer. The officers are from two to four months behind with their salaries.
