Pioneer Sons of Williamson County

Pioneer Sons 1939According to a Pioneer Sons of Williamson County application handout issued just prior to the 1939 Williamson County Centennial this group was formed on August 15, 1939. I suspect this was the formal registration date of the group since they already had activity the year before in 1938.

The primary requirements for joining the Pioneer Sons were that you be a male with a pioneer ancestor who settled in the county prior to 1840, similar to the Pioneer Daughters group. This organization formed out of the need to assist the movement started by the Pioneer Daughters toward the goal of conducting a county wide centennial celebration.

A joint meeting between the Pioneer Daughters and Pioneer Sons was held at the Marion Carnegie Library on November 28, 1938 to discuss the planning of a countywide celebration.

A joint committee was formed called the Williamson County Centennial Committee which was changed the following year on April 17, 1939 to The Williamson County Centennial Association and was incorporated as such.  The incorporation was to handle an event planned for August 26 through September 1, 1939 in a joint celebration with the Williamson County Fair.

Both the Sons and Daughters groups actively pursued membership at the county fair of 1938 and throughout the county up to the event in 1939.

After the celebration held from August 26 through September 1, 1939, the club’s goals had been primarily accomplished.

On September 29, 1939, the name of the Williamson County Centennial Association was changed to the Williamson County Historical Society which still exists today. With the joint historical society formed, the original two groups eventually dissolved.
