1970, Marion Improves Street Lighting

Marion Street Lighting Improvement Planned

Plans are being prepared for improvement of Marion Street lighting, Commissioner Robert Connell said Monday.

One third of the old incandescent type street lights will be converted to mercury vapor lights.

In addition, new overhanging mercury vapor lights are to be installed on DeYoung Street, New Rt. 13, on the east side to the city limits and the new lights will be installed on North Market from Goodall to DeYoung.

The west side of New Rt. 13 and the portion of North Market from the Public Square to Goodall already have mercury vapor lights.

There are 360 lights in the town now. About 112 of the incandescent type will be replaced. The others will be replaced in the next two years. Some of the mercury vapor lights will also be placed at intersections where there are no lights now.

Commissioner E.E. Jeter said bids for installation of sewer lines in various parts of the city, including the main line to the new state office building under construction will be opened 10 a.m. Jan. 12.

Commissioner Rex Presson reported Policeman Mike Wiseman entered the Veteran’s Hospital Saturday with a throat ailment and will be off duty indefinitely.

Four members of the Black Brothers for Progress attended a council meeting for the first time. Jerry Allen said they were “just observing.”

The group did not present a list of grievances to the council as members said they would after a demonstration march last week.
