Annexation of Five Acres Sought by Marion Council

Elections on annexation of five territories to Marion were asked by the city council Monday.

The requests will be filed in Williamson County Circuit Court and presiding Judge John Clayton will set an election day. People will vote separately in each territory. Territories are:

A strip of 300 feet on either side of North State Street from the city limits at Patrick Street to the north property lines of William Murphy and Glenn Peugh, 1,206 feet past the “Red Row” curve, in northeast Marion.

An area in northwest Marion bounded by West Main Street, Interstate Rt. 57, the Illinois Central Railroad tracks and Carbon Street.

An area in northeast Marion east from Fair Street to the Missouri-Pacific Railroad tracks including the residential area of Carter, Reeves, Parham, Griggs, Avant, Hartkopf, Roosevelt and Taft Streets.

A strip 300 feet wide on either side of Old Route 13 from the east city limits about 2,750 feet eastward to the Robert Stahlhut and Earl Parks residences.

And the Village of Scottsboro area which was not annexed by the previous administration two years ago. The previously annexed area hop-scotched lots mainly east of Russell Street.

Mayor Robert Butler said the territories include 800 to 1,000 residents, which could bring the city’s population to about 13,000.

Butler said, “most of the areas already have some city services. They can get improved services and become part of the city or stay like they are and receive no improvements and extensions of city services. The city council feels all should be in the city. We hope the electors feel the same way.”

The territories are separated in the elections so that persons will be able to vote only in their own area without affecting the vote in other areas.

Efforts by the city and Chamber of Commerce to get the territories into the city have been continuing for many years.
