Notice to Registered Users

I have been aware of a Russian hacker attempting to get into user accounts for a few weeks. Their preference would be my administrative account so they could exploit the site, but secondarily they will attempt to hack your user account. Since this site is free, if they just wanted an account they could sign up for one. Since I intensively block spam posts in the comments, that wouldn’t work for them either. The only reason for them to try and get into user accounts is to get your password figured out in order to hack your email and look for account numbers and personal information.

Many sites don’t limit the number of login entries, but this site does. After X number of tries the account is locked out for a predetermined time period. If you get a notice that you are locked out of your account, then someone is sniffing around your account. With the time locks on the accounts it would take forever to try and figure out passwords, unless your password is ridiculously simple, which is exactly what they are looking for.

If you have a strong password, then you should have no problems. If you have an obvious password then you should consider changing it. Remember, it is likely that people are snooping around all of your accounts all the time and you are just not ever notified of it.

If you get an automatic lock-out notice, my recommendation is to do nothing, but take note that it is happening and make sure all of your passwords are at least several characters long and a nice mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
