1913 Occupation of Williamson County Jail

The old jail building on South Van Buren Street was completed in 1913 at a cost of $140,000. It was built by the firm of Sam Fuller and Will Pulley. Its jail section was constructed to accommodate a maximum of 48 prisoners, four times the capacity of the previous jail which was located on South Madison Street across the street from the present entrance to the rear of the post office parking lot. Bank of Marion Expansion ca 1974 Reveals Hidden Cistern

Collectors of antiques dig in strange places for the gems to enhance their collection or to bolster their prowess as a trader in nostalgic souvenirs, but John Kowalski of the Commercial Design Co. of St Louis was surprised at what he found in a cistern under a building owned by the Bank of Marion. The cistern yielded a miscellaneous pile of 350 to 400 ancient glass bottles. Continue reading

The October 1981 meeting of the Williamson County Historical Society honored the Pioneer Daughters of Williamson County, forerunners of the present society. The organization originated in approximately 1935. Pearl Roberts, president gave a resume of the beginnings and included a history of the Pioneer Sons of Williamson County. Continue reading
