The First National Bank was incorporated in January 1891 as a successor to the Exchange Bank of J. H. Burnett and H.T. Goddard. The bank occupied the location on the square where the Bank of Marion now sits. Continue reading →

Marion and Eastern Railroad, Marion, Illinois

The Marion and Eastern Railroad was purchased in 1917 from the Ernest Coal Company who owned the Eldorado, Marion and Southwestern Railroad for $60,000 dollars. The line was originally built in 1908 and was a short line railroad of 11.5 miles extending from Marion, Illinois to Paulton, Illinois. Continue reading →

Names were often spelled differently back in time due to illiteracy and transcription errors. Consider all possible spellings of a last name. For instance, Maynard could also be Manard, Menard, Maynerd or Mainard.

Also, try leaving trailing letters off of names that have variations and keep the letters that tend to stay the same.
