One man is dead and another not expected to live is the result of a quarrel over a dog fight at the old West Side Mine near Johnston City Friday. Several miners were standing around when a bull dog attacked another dog. Mark McNeil kicked one of the dogs to separate them when someone objected. Soon a free-for-all was in progress. Harry McNeil stabbed Joe Carlino in the heart, killing him instantly. Lee Carlino, a brother of Joe, then shot McNeil, inflicting a wound that may be fatal. Lee escaped.    CH 6 Feb

The home of two Italians of Johnston City was dynamited shortly after 9 o’clock last night. The first explosion was at 9:17 at the home of Barney Pippi and the charge had been placed under the front porch, which it tore to pieces. The second explosion was at 9:20 at the home of Ros Bacino, a fruit and fish merchant. It had been placed under the back porch. The Pippi family was at home but no one was injured there. Mrs. Bacino is in critical condition as a result of the shock and fright. Two babies were home and the youngest was badly cut from flying glass. Mr. Bacino is a cousin to Joe Corlina who was recently killed as a result of a dog fight. Mr. Bacino had been actively seeking the man that killed his cousin and had appeared not only before the coroner’s jury but before the grand jury as well. The only motive that could be given for the attack on his home is that friends of the murderer were trying to intimidate him into refusing to give evidence. She survives with a seven-year-old daughter. The body did not reach here until Saturday and was taken to the home of his brother, Tony Malandrone. Andrew had a large ranch up in the mountains near Craig, the end of the Moffit line. It was 28 below zero when he passed away and the neighbors had to drive some twenty miles overland to get a burial certificate. The body was placed in a wooden box and hauled for about the same distance to an undertaker where it was prepared for shipment. Once loaded on the train and the journey began, a snow slide was struck many miles before Denver was reached and the casket had finally to be taken off the train after several days and carried down a mountain side and transferred onto another train on another level beyond the snow slide and the trip resumed to Denver. It was a long and tiresome journey. Mrs. Malandrone had fortunately left ahead of the body and reached here sometime before Louis and the casket arrived Saturday.
