John Harper was born January 16, 1845 in Pope County near Glendale. His father, Mathew Harper, was an immigrant from the state of Tennessee and his mother, Rhoda Leach, was a native of Pope County. Their occupation was that of real pioneer fanning in which only the crudest of tools and other necessary agricultural implements were to be had. In response to their hard work in tilling, their “new ground” responded with bountiful crops of corn, taters,’ t’backer (tobacco) and other truck. In the midst of this quality of subsistence John Harper was born and logically grew up learning firsthand what it took to “get by” under grim necessity. John Harper developed into one of the best and most progressive farmers in that vicinity and he remained in that line until failing health compelled him to retire, coming to Creal Springs about 1921 where he spent his remaining years. He was eighteen years old when he enlisted in the Union Army. The exact date of his enlistment was December 22, 1861. He was a sergeant in Company M. 13th Illinois Cavalry with Captain Norris as his first company commander and Colonel Erskine in command of his regiment. Many hardships characteristic of a true soldier’s life was endured in the bitter guerilla warfare in which he was called to do his part and mainly in the state of Arkansas. In the skirmishing, raiding and beating off marauding hands, he was permitted to come through without a wound although many of his comrades were either killed or wounded. About six weeks however, was spent in the hospital in Pinebluff, Arkansas in which city was the headquarters of his regiment. After receiving his discharge in September 1865, he returned to his Pope County parental home and in 1869 he was married to a neighbor girl, Miss Amanda Whiteside, who journeyed with him in peace until her death in January 1914. Seven children blessed their married life, only three of whom are living as follows, Alonzo, prison guard at Chester; Mrs. Maud S’barger, Chester and Mrs. Bruce Allard of Creal Springs with whom he now resides. Our subject is a Republican and has never missed voting for all the candidates for president on that ticket since beginning with his first vote for Abraham Lincoln in 1864, a record he is deeply proud of. Veto Cusumano of Marion was instantly killed at 8:15 a.m. Monday at the Puritan Mine about three quarters of a mile west of Crenshaw Crossing, when a large rock from the roof of the slope fell on him. The accident was the culmination of a series of tragedies that have stalked the Cusumano family this spring. The first was March 21 when the family home on West Union Street was partly destroyed by fire when Cusumano, his wife and four children barely escaped with their lives. The fire originated from candles used in a Catholic ceremony that had been left burning when the family retired. Cusumano was badly burned while he carried his four children to safety. Several weeks after that fire again brought disaster in the Italian house when gasoline in the tank of an automobile in the garage in rear of the house became ignited from an open light by which the mother was attempting to draw gasoline from the car to clean a rug that one of the children had turned over a bottle of ink on. The garage was completely demolished and their car greatly damaged but the Cusumano’s escaped serious injury. Aug 2, 1927
