1939, October 26 – Shoe Store on Square Damaged by Fire

1937, August 28 – Smart Shoppe on South Side of Square Damaged

1936, January 3 – Turnage Feed and Grocery has Fire

Smoke which drifted across the areaway separating two businesses and into the kitchen of the Gem CafĂ© at 12:50 am gave the alarm which took firemen to the scene in time to prevent a fire in the Turnage Feed and Grocery Store from spreading with disastrous results. Continue reading →

1934, December 24 – Major Fire Damages South Side of Square

1930, August 11 – Store Off NW Corner of Square Burns

Fire discovered in the Shaw Furniture store, just off the northwest corner of the public square at 12:40 am Sunday morning destroyed half of the $12,000 stock and damaged the rest of it to the extent of almost a total loss. Continue reading →

Names were often spelled differently back in time due to illiteracy and transcription errors. Consider all possible spellings of a last name. For instance, Maynard could also be Manard, Menard, Maynerd or Mainard.

Also, try leaving trailing letters off of names that have variations and keep the letters that tend to stay the same.
