Names were often spelled differently back in time due to illiteracy and transcription errors. Consider all possible spellings of a last name. For instance, Maynard could also be Manard, Menard, Maynerd or Mainard.

Also, try leaving trailing letters off of names that have variations and keep the letters that tend to stay the same.
