Allen Bainbridge Scurlock, Marion alderman and merchant, was born on February 17, 1832 in Bainbridge, Illinois, just west of Marion. He was named after Allen Bainbridge who founded the village of Bainbridge, built the Western Exchange Hotel and was the brother of J.B. Bainbridge. Continue reading

Thomas Taylor Dunaway, prominent Marion businessman and three term city alderman, was the son of Samuel McNight Dunaway (1809 – 1876) and Julia Tarpley (1817 – 1893). Samuel was an early pioneer in Williamson County and helped settle the village of Bainbridge. He was a merchant, railroad president and he bought and sold much land in Williamson County’s early period. Edward E. Longbons, the first president of the Bank of Marion in 1937, was born on May 18, 1869 near Albion in Edwards County, Illinois, the son of Thomas Longbons and Mary Jane Colyer Longbons. His mother was the daughter of Edward Colyer (1795-1858) and Jane Thread Colyer (1792-1860). She was born May 10, 1828 in Albion and died there Jul 24, 1895. Thomas, his father, was born on February 21, 1834 in Nottinghamshire, England and died in 1910 in Albion, Edwards County, Illinois. William Wallace Clemens, lawyer, judge, bank officer and Marion city Trustee, was born on a farm in Crittenden County, Kentucky on September 29, 1839, the son of Jonathan R. Clemens. His father was born May 24, 1811 in Livingston County, Kentucky and died February 23, 1862 in Crittenden County. William’s mother, Minerva Robertson, was born October 21, 1815 in Livingston County, Kentucky and died there on Jan 4, 1907. Continue reading
