Historic Architecture of Marion

A brochure reflecting the architectural style and history of several of Marion’s homes, business and civic buildings. This brochure was created at the College of Technical Careers, Quigley Computer Graphics Laboratory, Southern Illinois University. Funding was provided by the Greater Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, Williamson County Tourism Council, City of Mairon, Illinois.

1916, February 10 – Major Fire on North Side of Square

About 7:30 P.M. police saw smoke coming from the Moore Jewelry Store window on the North Side of the Square. Before that fire was extinguished, Marion had suffered a loss of more than $125,000 that night. Continue reading

1935, November 26 – Fire Inspection Condemns 2 Buildings on E. Main St.

Fire Chief Harry Cash reported to the city council that he and the state fire marshal’s office had condemned two frame store buildings on E. Main St. The buildings are located in the 600 block, house five families in addition to stores on the ground floor.
