1925, News Clippings, January thru March

Mrs. Tabitha Wells died at three o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the state hospital at Anna. Mrs. Wells was born at Ava, Mo. August 6, 1870 and at the time of her death was 54 years, 4 months and 25 days of age. She was the daughter of David and Sara Marler. At the age of 17 she was married to S. A. D. Worrell. To this union six children were born, 5 who preceded their mother in death. April 22, 1913 the deceased was married to Charles Wells who survives her. She also leaves two daughters, Mrs. Will O’Neil and Mrs. Floyd Groves, both of Marion. Deceased was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at the home of W. P. O’Neil of Marion and interment will be at the Maplewood Cemetery. Jan 1, 1925

In the early part of the 20th century, one of our local businessmen named Hosea Walter Cagle had the idea to create a large amusement park where people could go and have fun and relax. Hosea was known as one of the first car owners in Marion, a brass Elmore roadster. In 1915, he had already created one of the largest automobile garages in Southern Illinois known as Cagle Garage in the 600 block of N. Market Street which he ended up leasing so that he could focus on his amusement park.

Cagle, Hosea, 1880-1924, Businessman & Park Owner

Hosea Walter Cagle was born on January 19, 1880 on his parent’s farm located just south of Pigeon Creek Road in what is now the U.S. Wildlife refuge. When Hosea was born, the family farm was located next to Crab Orchard Creek under what is now Crab Orchard Lake. His parents were Pleasant E. Cagle and Flora Elmida McCown. Hosea quite likely got his primary education attending the local rural schools of the area which, given the location, was most likely Chamness School but later attended and graduated from a mechanics school.

1924, News Clippings, October thru December

May Weaver, colored month-old daughter of Minnie Weaver, 1302 South Monroe, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday and funeral services will be Thursday with burial at Maplewood Cemetery. Oct 1. 1924

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Tarpley, widow of Scott Tarpley, was found dead in her bed on Wednesday morning at the home of her brother, N. 0. Joiner, 121 North Van Buren Street where Mrs. Tarpley made her home. Mrs. Tarpley was born in this state March 22, 1860 and at the time of death was 64 years, 6 months and 9 days old. She had lived in Illinois all of her life. Thirty years ago, she professed faith in Christ, but never united with any church. Mrs. Tarpley had been suffering from cancer of the stomach for some time and that was the cause of her death. Two brothers survive her, N. 0. Joiner of Marion and Rad Joiner of Marion Route Two. The husband died two years ago while they were living in Carbondale. Funeral services and interment on Saturday at Ferrell Cemetery. Oct 1, 1924
