6 Jul – Jack Walker of Metropolis killed Ed Neimeyer during a quarrel by stabbing, Monday of last week. EP

Capt. Wherry, an explorer of Pulaski County is making some interesting discoveries In that county…has found several skeletons of a race of people that were not more than 4 feet 5 inches tall. EP

“Pony” Gratten was found dead on D.B. Gratten’s porch in Galatia last Tuesday morning…cause of sudden death unknown. EP

Lulu, little daughter of Levi Simmons of this place, was climbing a wild cherry tree west of town…fell and broke both arms last Tuesday. EP

George McHenry shot and killed Charley Gilpin Tuesday of last week in Equality, Saline County. EP

George Furlong, late of this county, died Monday. MM

A colored man named William Marbley drowned lest Saturday near Carbondale…washed off horse while fording Crab Orchard Creek… body recovered Monday. MM

20 July – Daniel Tice, 7 year old son of Jacob Tice of Union County drowned in a pond on Sunday last week. EP

A woman in Wabash County named Newkirk was killed last week by a team of runaway horses attached to a wagon. EP

Bell Ferguson, daughter of late Dr. T.D. Ferguson, aged about 16 years, was arrested last Saturday by Esquire White who lives in the western part of the county — charged with stealing some clothing and jewelry from his house while his family was away ___ took her before R.M. Fisher. Justice of Peace in Vienna…held in jail in lieu of bail.    Johnson County Yeoman EP

Yesterday afternoon Madame Loucks who lives east of here was arrested by Officer Grider ….    charged with keeping a lewd house… bound over to court in sum of $100 and jailed for lack of it. EP

Monday night the city marshall arrested Mahala Vineyard, a prostitute who has been loitering for several days…fined $10. EP

Sunday morning S.H. Skelton shot at Z.T. Hewett with a rifle and missed … They are brothers-in-law and live 5 miles east of here… EP

27 Jul – The oldest man in America, Abner Jackson, lives in Washington County. He is 112. EP

Bell Ferguson escaped from the Johnson County jail. EP

William Stoker of Jackson County died suddenly Sunday from an overdose of opium which he had taken to relieve a toothache. EP

Billy Sanderson, a carpenter of Shawneetown, was overcome by heat and cannot recover. George Calvin, colored, of same place was sun-struck and died in a short time. EP

Last Sunday W.F. Stewart of Makanda went to Cobden and returned on the evening train with a jug of whiskey. Listus Grissom, Alfred and George Bradshaw and Ely Boren engaged in a game of cards with him, which resulted in a fight. After the fight, Stewart offered his left hand to make up with Grissom and shot him with his right. He inflicted a fatal wound in the breast, from which he died the next morning.    The murderer escaped. EP

A little child of Nathan Reid drowned in a washtub last Friday … mother was washing and left the tub to hang out clothes, returned and found almost lifeless corpse. By a retentive memory and steady work, she restored life. MM

3 Aug – Dr. S.H. Mitchell and lady left on the evening train on Saturday for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. MM

Lewis Pulley, son of Washington Pulley, living 4 miles east, tried to put a wheel back on a threshing machine while it was running … his left hand was caught between the belt and wheel, breaking his arm in several places. Dr. Bundy of Marlon and Dr. Burgess of Lake Creek amputated his arm above the elbow.    MM & EP

James and John Kerr, twins who reside near Makanda, are almost 96 years old. They have fought together in every war of the US, starting with the war of 1812 thru the Mexican war…John’s wife died in 1873 and he married a widow named Graham, aged about 70, in 1875. MM

A little child of Albert Cline’s died here Thursday, their only child. MM

A man named Garrett drowned in the Wabash River near Mt. Carmel last week. EP

In Wayne County, Tom Brown’s little boy was allowed to play with a revolver. It went off, shooting his little sister in the eye, killing her. EP

Michael Braide, a German farmer living 2 miles west of Mt. Carmel, drowned in a pond on his farm —had been missing 3 days. EP

Samuel Stotlar, aged citizen of Herrin’s Prairie, died last Friday night of congestion of the stomach. EP

10 Aug – A Negro named George Osborn shot and killed another Negro named Ellis week before last in White County. EP

The wife of Needham Davis of Spillertown died the first of the week. EP

Mahala Vineyard was before Squire Reynolds on Monday … prosecuting witness failed to appear and she was released. EP

Mrs. Stein, wife of Jacob, died suddenly Monday afternoon … left a husband and children. EP

Last Saturday while the primary election was being held, a cutting affray happened at that place. James Kelley, a miner from Carterville had too much to drink and stabbed Samuel B. Lipsey in the back. EP

Hugh Lamaster was born in SC, 24 Feb 1766, moved with parents to Robinson County, TN at age 13 —married there Mary Ann Watson in April 1819…professed religion in fall of 1836 and moved with his family to Williamson County, IL in March 1836 ___ died 30 Jul 1876 of dropsy…suffered greatly for about 5 weeks, but never murmured … Many people will remember seeing Father Lamaster praising the Lord at the old Camp Ground — his son John died nearly 27 years ago and his wife died nearly 11 years ago. MM

Herrin’s Prairie Lodge No. 693 A.F. & A.M.  – death of brother John D. Herrin …was a kind husband and indulgent father. KM

Died on the 7th, Wilhelmina Stein, consort of Jacob Stein, of this place, of heart disease — at supper table when attacked and lived 2 hours .. .funeral at M.E. Church at 3 o’clock Tuesday evening by Rev.  M.S. Evans. MM

Died on the 7th, Mrs. Davis, consort of Neathan Davis, 2 miles north of here, of congestion of the brain. MM

The grounds where the school house of Williams Prairie burned last spring are being decorated with a new one far in advance of the old. MM

Rev. George H. Lamaster has gone to Kansas on a prospecting tour with the intention of locating, should the country suit him. mm

We, in company with Dr. A.N. Lodge, visited the poor farm last Sunday. Mr. Cash keeps 19 paupers. MM

17 Aug – Dr. L. J. Simpson will preach the funeral discourse of Lizzie A., consort, and Mary J. and T. C. Robinson, daughters of Charles Robinson at the M.E. Church in this place, the first Sunday in September, next. MM

Henry Roberts and wife are enjoying the company of a 10 ½ pound baby boy born Wednesday night of last week, Alfred Moulton and wife had a 10 pound girl last Thursday night, J.M. Burkhart and wife being only one day behind come in for the prize with a boy on Friday night. The children are good looking and the parents happy. MM

Dr. Denison has lost his fine thoroughbred horse, Glencoe. He broke a leg and the Doctor knocked him in the head. MM

Amos Rogers of Franklin County was adjudged insane last week and sent to the asylum. EP

A man named Whisnant stabbed and killed Thomas Vaughn in Saline County. EP

Scott McCormick stabbed Jim Logan, colored; near Mann and Edwards Mill…McCormick placed under guard of Dave Coke, but escaped. Both colored. MM

Terry Crain, 42, tried at Murphysboro for murder of old man Burbridge at Crab Orchard bridge, 2 miles east of Carbondale in fall of 1872 (1862?). The 128th Illinois Vol. Infantry, of which Crain was a member had halted on the bridge for some reason, on their way to Camp Butler. The old man came along with an ox team and was supposed to have made some derogatory remark and was hit on the side of the head with a stone … Crain sentenced to 15 years … case passed without arrest until the exposure of the Vendetta in this county by Sam Music and the apprehension of the parties Involved, which led to the exposure of Terry Crain’s murder. He is an uncle of Marshall Crain who was hung here in January.   (EP says the murder took place in 1863 on the Marion and Carbondale road.)    BP & MM

24 Aug Levi Stilley of Crab Orchard died Monday … prominent man well known by all old settlers … died of congestive chill … buried yesterday on his farm with Masonic honors.    MM 6 EP

Thomas Bones has bought property at Crab Orchard and will locate there…has or will soon have appointment as postmaster. MM

Dean Norman is happy – It’s a girl. EP

Rev. George W. Lamaster returned from Kansas last week and expressed a desire to make it his future home. MM

Thomas Simmons, for several days an inmate of the county poor house and William Jordan, another pauper, had an altercation Friday when Simmons hit Jordan with a club. Simmons , who is a stranger in the county was jailed … has wife and children on the county …  sent there on account of a disability caused by sore eyes. MM

Saturday evening, 2 miles north of Carbondale, William Dillinger and Bill Bowman had trouble about whiskey. Bowman shot at Dillinger with a rifle, missed, and the ball lodged in the brain of the 7 year old daughter of Dillinger. MM

3 children of Esquire Lambert of Hamilton County took sick the other day and died. EP

Liviat Hudson of Big Hill, Jackson County, was bitten in 2 places by a rattlesnake last week and died In 6 hours. EP

Wes Wats, a gunsmith, was arrested in Shawneetown by a detective from Pennsylvania. He is the leader of a gang of robbers who operated in western Pennsylvania and is said to be the murderer of his father. EP

Charles Hopper will leave here next Sunday for Salt Lake, U.T. to make his home with his sister, Mrs. John M. Cunningham. EP

Henry Thomas and Will Downer got into a difficulty with David Duty at New Haven, Gallatin County, week before last. Duty was sitting with a knife out, Thomas kicked him in the side and the two fell upon him with clubs and beat him so badly that he died the following Monday.    EP & MM

William Johnson of Wabash County has a stalk of corn 40 feet high with 2 ears of corn growing upon it at a distance of thirty odd feet from the level of the surrounding country. EP

M.O. Dean of the Burnside Hotel was arrested for keepinq a lewd house. EP

A few nights ago Jud Askew attended Caney Church and before church was out he rode off on a horse belonging to Mr. Odum. Odum offered a reward of $100 … horse was taken up as a stray in Franklin County and recovered … Dr. W.C. Willeford and Brice Holland learned of his whereabouts and went to the eastern part of Jefferson County and arrested him at the home of his sister. He is now taking his meals at Dave Coke’s hotel (Jail) and playing checkers with his nose.  EP

31 Aug. – Dr. J.C. Mitchell is a man of numerous smiles, they have a new girl, Friday night. EP

A little child of John Mason, 2 ½ miles northwest of this place died Saturday night. EP

Dr. W.H. Bentley returned from Texas Last Friday. He has come to stay. EP

William Pittsford of Murphysboro was in town visiting friends and relatives. He was a Marion boy 20 years ago. EP

David M. Fligor died yesterday of a congestive chill at his home in the southwest part of the county…was for a number of years in the employ of Young and Kern as a saddler…leaves a wife and 2 or 4 small children. EP

A man named Bowman tried to kill his brother-in-law near Carbondale last Saturday afternoon ___ missed and killed his little niece who was standing by her father. EP

The Veach family, living out on the Conley farm, don’t get along very well. Yesterday the old man Veach had his wife arrested and bound In a bond to keep the peace in the family, while Squire Reynolds was binding, he bound the old man In a peace bond also, but the old man couldn’t give bail and consequently he was sent to Jail where the old lady will not be apt to molest him soon. EP

Tuesday afternoon someone placed several railroad ties across the track between here and Crainville.    The engineer, Dick Getton, saw them in time to stop. EP

Abner Jackson, 113 years old, died in Washington County the other day. EP

7 Sept – Scott McCormick who cut the Negro boy in the arm some days ago, was captured last Friday In Franklin County. EP

Hon. John A. Logan will address the Republicans at Carbondale next Saturday. An excursion train will run from this place.  EP

14  Sept – Mt. Zion CP Church, 3 miles east, has employed Rev. Jordan to preach for them the next 12 months. MM

Benton Standard – A child of George Stewart, 3 miles southwest of here, was found dead in bed yesterday morning … went to bed the evening before in usual health except for a sore throat…is supposed diphtheria was cause of death.  MM

Dr. Thomas S. Mitchell of Raleigh was in hay barn Saturday evening near roof and fell, striking his head on a ladder … lay unconscious ½ hour before he was found … is thought he will recover, though when last heard of he was in critical condition. MM

Mrs. Mary A. Holmes, 58, of Pulaski County, has been sent to the insane asylum at Anna. EP

Mike Fittinger of Jonesboro has the oldest bible in the country… printed in the German language in 1640. EP

General Logan spoke at Carbondale to a large crowd last Saturday. An excursion train was run from this place and about 50 or 60 of our citizens attended. EP

Last Friday morning a man calling himself Michael Towle was picked south of town near the house of young Ned Hampton .. he had been at the coal bank the day before and told Captain Viall that he was able to work, that he had been having the chills for some time and thought he would not live long .. he ate a hearty supper and the next morning was found in a bad condition, nearly speechless… was brought to town and taken to the courthouse and laid on a pallet in the hall till Saturday morning. He was better Saturday night and was removed to the Hughes House where he died Sunday night. In his possession was a steamboat ticket from some point in Cairo on the packet Grand Tower .. not able to tell where he came from.. buried by the county. Harrisburg Chronicle EP

21 Sept – An elopement in high life took place at Tamaroa last week. The parties were Cyrus Pyle and Miss Bowman. EP

Mrs. Deputy, a Wabash County woman, dropped dead last week while engaged in waiting upon a sick child … cause was apoplexy. EP

Mr. Jacob Sanders of Murphysboro, well known to most people in Williamson County, died Saturday night the 9th. EP

John Privett, brother of Isaac of this city, died last Sunday of Typhoid fever and was buried Monday. EP

Mrs. Maria Price, widow of Kinchen Price, living 2 ½ miles southwest of here died last Tuesday. EP

The infant daughter of M.T. Vick died. EP

McNairy County, Tennessee residents made affidavits that they saw James Norris in McNairy Cuonty on May 15, 1874, the day James Henderson was killed. Norris is now serving time in Joliet for that murder, was formerly of that county.. seen there with Henry Bulliner and George Bulliner, Jr. Some who testified at the trial of James Norris were; A.D. Watson, James Smith, Wilshire Bandy, Charles H. Denison, William Thompson, F.G. Henderson,  Thomas Wilson, James Turnage, Jacob Beard, Dr. E.L. Denison, Arthur Blake, Giles Nelson, Monroe Bulliner, Emanuel Bulliner, Lock Bush, Lewis Brannon, George Bulliner, Jourden S. Halstead of McNairy County, formerly of Williamson County, said, “Sallie Bulliner is my wife’s sister.” John Ivy of McNairy County and Dr. J.W. Freeling of McNairy County also testified. EP

28 Sept – An infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Norman of this city died last Saturday night. EP

Pad Henderson returned yesterday … sent to Joliet a year ago for malicious mischief. EP

Dr. William C. Willeford and Miss Lou Wiley, both of this city, were married last Sunday by Rev. M.P. Wilken. EP & MM

In Carbondale last Thursday night, D.A.S. Gent shot and killed Aleck Frazier .. Gent was trying to keep Frazier from maltreating his wife and children, when Frazier struck a blow and attempted to draw a revolver. Gent shot him in the left breast, causing his death an hour later … grand jury failed to indict Gent. EP

Joseph Mallott of Carmi mistook morphine for quinine and died from the effects last week. EP

Rev. Williams, Methodist minister of Carbondale, died Saturday of a congestive chill. EP

A young man named Wheeler was killed on the race track near Golconda a few days ago when a horse “flew” the track and threw him into a tree. EP

Mr. R.G. Coke of Sulphur Springs lost his pocketbook containing $45 in bills and about $1 in change .. offers $5 reward. EP

Mrs. Landers, consort of John Landers of Bainbridge Precinct died Sunday and was buried last Monday by Order of Patrons of Husbandry. MM

The little child and only son of Dr. M.M. McDonald of Crab Orchard died Thursday. MM

5 Oct – Died at Stonefort, Julia Florence, only daughter of William and Sarah Ridgeway, and only grandchild of W.H. and Nancy Ridgeway. She was doted on by her grandmother, but the Master called. MM

Married 1 October at home of bride’s mother, Mrs. Mary A. Hunter, M.A. Hunter and Isam Copher by Rev. Willis Corder. MM

Some 2 weeks ago, Peter Tucker struck his wife with a spade, for which he was fined $3 and costs. It is said she is dying from the effects. Mound City Patriot   MM

 Walter Warder and lady visited the Centennial exposition In Philadelphia. MM

Moses Odum died Monday at his residence 5 miles northeast of Marion.    KM      EP says died Sunday.

A son of James Hatwell died suddenly Friday with a congestive chill. MM

Marsh Clayton of Franklin County cut 6 tobacco plants last Tuesday that weighed 74 pounds … one weighed 18 …wants to know who can beat that…  Harrisburq Chronicle. We don’t know about the weight, but M.W. Fuller of this county raised what is considered a good crop. Many of the plants measured 7 feet across the top and the leaves measured 27 inches wide. MM

Mrs. Jones of eastern part of county died Sunday. EP

Mr. Dallas Biggs of this place will leave here in a short time to take up residence in Minnesota. EP

A severe shock of earthquake was felt in Southern Illinois Sunday night. EP

A small smart boy of Pinckneyville locates Marion:  8 miles from 3 mile, 6 miles from 9 mile,  9 miles from 6 mile and 2 miles from 4 mile.  EP

James L. Ramsey, aged man of southwest part of county, died of congestion of the stomach and bowels. EP

Hart Davis, John Moore and Dean Norman went out east a short distance to arrest a man named Gregory for bastardy.  He escaped. EP

Friday night last week, Miss Dora F. Schrader of Chester was burned to death In St. Louis, trying to kindle a fire with alcohol. EP

At Sneakout in Franklin County last Thursday, Bow Craford and a man named Downes got into a fight … 2 other Downes men cut him with knives. EP

13 Oct – William Rex has an 11 pound boarder, last Tuesday the time.   MM    (EP says an 11  pound girl Monday night)

Among the curiosities at the fair last week was a cucumber entered by James Bradley that measured 28 ½ inches in length and 27 ½ inches in circumference. MM

Frank Roy, the drayman, has followed the advice of Horace Greeley and gone west” or somewhere else … MM

J.H. Duncan and family will start to the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia Monday. MM

Marion Brown of Perry County was thrown from a horse and killed last Thursday night week. Uriah Baswell of same county was killed Saturday week by falling 80 feet in a coal pit. MM

Mary J.  Hartwell and George Arnold were married at Lake Creek Church Sunday evening, October  15. MM

Jonathan A. Baker, old citizen of Grassy Precinct died at his residence Saturday the 14th after a painful illness of 3 months … was attended by Dr. D.R. Sanders who made a post mortem examination 13 hours after he died … cause was ulcers of the stomach, MM

R.M. Hehenburger,  living 2 miles south of Jonesboro was robbed of $800 Friday night … burglars poisoned his dogs and used chloroform on him. EP

Col. Henry L. Webb, one of early pioneers of this state, died at home in Makanda last Thursday, age 82. EP

A girl for Van Simmons … a boy for Tom Davis Sunday night. EP

W.R. Ward of Benton and Emma Snyder of Osage were married Sunday of last week. EP

John Grace was sentenced to 1 year for assault to rape. EP

People Vs Aaron Heal had change of venue to Franklin County … had come to this county from Saline County on change of venue. EP

19 Oct – The 5 year old child of Joshua Grace was killed near Stonefort … thrown from wagon. EP

The old flag that belonged to the 31st Illinois Regiment of Infantry is on exhibition at the Post Office in Harrisburg. EP

Uriah Barwell fell 80 feet from a coal tip at a coal mine 6 miles west of Pinckneyvllle one day last week and killed. EP

Miss Alice Huffman who was employed to teach at the Foreman School in Johnson County, has refused to teach because she does not wish to teach a mixed school. EP

A balloon ascension at the Shawneetown fair last week caused the death of an aeronaut named Barhams, … wind carried it across the Ohio River and it came down among dead trees…100 feet from the ground he was seen to fall toward earth and catch at a limb which broke. EP

Miss Stevens, living in the west part of the county, died yesterday. EP

Mardone Mitchell of Grayville is visiting relatives and friends here. EP

26 Oct – Old Uncle Brackston Tippy, one of oldest citizens, died at his residence 3 miles southwest of this place Saturday, also Isaac West died Saturday in same neighborhood.  MM & EP

Mrs. Emila Calvert, widow of William S. Calvert died yesterday … funeral at City Cemetery today.    MM & EP

Leander Ferrell was tried and acquitted last week for killing James B. Morray at Marion May 17,  1875…trial lasted 5 days and a portion of 2 nights…Jury returned verdict in 45 minutes. EP & MM

John Avery, aged citizen of Lake Creek Pet., died yesterday. EP

William Hutchinson of Franklin County raised 13 wagon loads of castor beans this year. EP

A soldier’s reunion was held at Harrisburg Wednesday … 10,000 in attendance. EP

A Murphysboro woman has never used but one needle for 19 years, wore one dress for 17 years and wore one pair of shoes for 15 years. EP

Saturday the 14th, C.P. Evans was ventilated with bullets at Ridgway, Gallatin County by a man named Chapel … may recover. EP

James C. Smith of Franklin County and Mahilda C. Benedict were married 22 October at residence of bride’s father, George Benedict, by Rev. Phillips. MM

2 Nov – Dr. George L. Owen has returned from a tour of the eastern states … also visited Philadelphia and the centennial show, MM

Jacob Binkley, living short distance east of here, died Thursday.

Cam Rhine was killed Tuesday of last week at Weber’s mill in Eldorado … stored several thousand pounds of bran on a porch floor and it gave way and fell upon him. EP

9 Nov. – Samuel Lipsey, who John Kelley stabbed in the back at Carterville on the day of the primary election, August 5, died last Friday was able to be up most of the time he was injured. It is said he came to his death on account of the stabs. EP

Dr. William J. Carter will locate in this city next week. MM

16 Nov. – Mr. Ritter of Dongola killed himself by shooting himself in the head with a shotgun the other day.    EP

We will send the Press to any man for one year who will bring us 3 bushels of turnips, also 3 bushel, of apples, 30 good heads of cabbage, 3 bushel of Irish potatoes, a load of good stove wood or 4 bushel of sweet potatoes. EP

Mrs. Julia A. Grogan, wife of Bradley Grogan, died last Monday after a brief illness…burled City Cemetery Tuesday. EP

Thomas Bones was elected Justice of Peace in Crab Orchard to fill the vacancy made by the removal of Esquire Scoby. MM

The ordinance of baptism was administered to Mrs. Mary Huffman and Miss Rebecca Jenkins near Shiloh Church, 3 miles south of Marion last Sunday. MM

Mrs. Julia A. Grogan, consort of A.B. Grogan, died here Monday … funeral at Baptist Church Tuesday by Rev. McAlpin. MM

23 Nov – John P. Stelle, late editor of the McLeansboro Era has retired from the editorial chair. MM

Rev. James Shaw died at his residence at Attila 11 Nov, aged 64 years,  10 months and 17 days … born Wilson County, Tennessee 25 Dec 1811 … embraced religion 22 Sep 1825 and united with the Methodist Church …survived by wife and 8 children … funeral will be attended to December 25, 1876 at Pleasant Grove Church, 8 miles east of Marlon. MM

Lida ChadwelL, late of Corinth, Illinois and Oliver Hinchman of Greenwood County, Kansas ware married by Esquire J. Scott Stewart at home of George L. Mitchell in Greenwood County, Kansas.  MM

In Marion County a man named Oaldfield was killed near Walnut Hill by being thrown from a horse. EP

The body of John Barr, who was buried in Hamilton County 19 years ago was being exhumed the other day … as diggers neared the case, a snake 3 feet long crawled therefrom. EP

A few days ago, 3 tramps put a pistol to the head of W.A. Jones of Opdyke, Jefferson County and demanded his money. He grasped the weapon and it went off and took 3 of his fingers. The would be robbers fled. EP

Mr. Henry Youngblood, who resides on farm of John B. Bainbridge a short distance east of town, died Sunday of typhoid pneumonia. EP

We had the pleasure of attending an opossum supper on Wednesday evening which was gotten up under the directions of Col. Hundley whose hospitality is not to be excelled. Fourteen gentlemen feasted, three of the marsupial little animals having been served up for the occasion. The participants were: Col. Hundley, Frank Tibbs, Allen Scurlock, M.W. Robertson, F. Doty, Jerome Holland, Marion Lee, Dr. Tinker, George Brock, Jake Sharp, John Schultz, A.J. Benson and ye local. The quadrupeds were cooked by Bill Rex of the Northside Restaurant and the excellent manner in which the meat was prepared, showed that Bill knows all about cooking a possum. It was an enjoyable occasion to all present, and the way the grub piles grew less and the shadows of the participants grew larger in proportion, was amazing. Oh, how we long for another such occasion!  EP (The January 4, 1877 edition of the Press had this to report: Col. Hundley had quite a severe attack of congestion of the stomach on Tuesday night.)  [Perhaps another opossum supper?)

30 Nov – C.W. Hutchison will hold a series of meetings at Corley Schoolhouse, commencing 23 December and will also preach the funeral of Sister Corley 24 Dec. MM

Samuel Dunaway Sr. died at his residence in this city last Tuesday after a brief illness … 67 years old…one of oldest citizens… had been in mercantile business several years…buried at Bainbridge. EP & MM

Mrs. Nicks, wife of William, died last week. MM

McDonald, the hotel keeper who killed George Brush at Carbondale 3 years ago has been pardoned by the Governor under the 2/3 rule for good behavior. EP & MM

Scarlet fever is raging at Crab Orchard. James T. Cunningham lost a little child last week and another member of his family has it. MM

Dr. William J. Carter will not locate at Marion, but will go to Stonefort. MM

W.A.C. (Chesley) McCoy is visiting friends and relatives in this county, 26 years ago he, accompanied by Col. John White and _  Wiley, left Marion for California. The latter 2 returned but McCoy, except for a short visit in 1861, has been absent from this county … has traveled over considerable, including South America and the western territories of the U.S. MM

J.B. Stewart of DuQuoin was killed instantly last Thursday by being caught in the machinery of a spoke factory. EP

William McGehee hung himself with a necktie week before last in Gallatin County…17 years old. EP

At Ava, Jackson County, William Crossfield shot and killed Dan Morris, former City Marshall of Carbondale, last Saturday … self defense … Crossfield was examined and came clear. EP

James Clarida died at his residence southeast of here last Monday week. MM

Monday evening last week, Stephen Pruett stabbed Carrol Carter to death 9 miles west of Vienna…old feud was reason. EP

21 Dec – Mr. Arch Claraday, late of Crab Orchard Precinct, died yesterday.    MM & EP

John G. Williams, farmer of Herrin’s Prairie, died Saturday of pneumonia … buried with Masonic rites and Patrons of Husbandry in Stotlar graveyard near late residence of Samuel Stotlar. MM & EP

Rev. W.H. Blankenship and Mrs. Martin were married Sunday by Rev. John S. Gulledge. KM

Harrisburg Chronicle – Elias Johnson, living between here and Eldorado was killed instantly during a storm by a limb falling on his head. Also, P.H. Baker, living 4 miles northwest of Marion had a fatal accident last Monday … hauling lumber and while going downhill the lumber slipped … caused mules to run away and throw him off. He died in a short time.    MM (EP says it was J.E. Johnson)

McLeansboro Era – John Robinson, young farmer living near Charleston, Illinois was going home from church last night … thrown from horse and died this morning at 10 o’clock. MM

J.C. Clark who lived for some time past 1 mile east, quietly evacuated his premises last week and moved to quarters unknown … is supposed he returned to White County from whence he came. MM

Thomas Davis has erected a wagon house on East Main Street, one block east of the public square. MM

L.K. Tucker and lady arrived in Marion Last Thursday. Mr. Tucker has captured one of Kentucky’s daughters. MM

The fence around the public well is in bad order. Let those in authority see to it that it is at once repaired. The well is a great benefit to the public and should be kept in good order. MM

Thomas Duncan and Hattie Bowen were married 20 Dec. at residence of J.H. Duncan, this city. EP

28 Dec. – John Lauder and Mrs. Sisney, widow of the late George W. Sisney were married at Carbondale Monday. EP

James T. Gill was appointed postmaster of Attila to fill vacancy created by death of James Shaw. MM

Alonzo Evans and Martha A. Ray of Lake Creek Precinct were married 24 Dec by Exquire W.W. Young at residence of bride’s father. MM

The wife of Dr. J.J. Fly of Pulley’s Mill, has been sorely afflicted for several weeks, lost one of her eyes and the other is in precarious condition. MM

Thursday night, two men entered the home of Charley Kern, demanded money of Mrs. Kern and keys to her husband’s safe … asked which way her husband came home from the store at night … failing to obtain object of their search, they bound her with cords, her hands behind her and gagged her with the Missouri Republican and muffled her face with a scarf … left her lying on the floor …. and her husband released her about 15 minutes later. MM

C.J. Keaster has moved to town, locating in the Cunningham property on East Main Street. MM

The lot on which the courthouse stood sold yesterday to Charles M. Kern for $875.    MM & BP

Rev. Hutchison preached the funeral of Mrs. Corley at Corley School House Sunday. MM

Thomas Enlow of Grayville, went to Vincennes last Friday with about $50 in his pocket … visited notorious house of ill fame where it is supposed he was drugged, robbed and turned out in the bitter cold … unconscious from the effects of drugs, he wandered around in the cold and was found Saturday morning by a watchman at the O & M roundhouse, sitting with his back to the roundhouse and mechanically knocking the tips of his bleeding fingers together … they cut the boots from his feet and found them to be almost full of blood from cracks in his feet, caused from the extreme cold … sent back to Grayville on the evening train Saturday, still alive, but we are Informed he cannot possibly recover. EP
